HIV/AIDS Counsellor Print E-mail

Upon completion of the programme, trained and certified peer counsellors will be able to offer first line lay counselling to HIV infected and affected employees in the workplace.

Training modules
The peer counsellor training programme consists of the following modules:

  • Values and values clarification
  • Overview of reproductive and sexual health
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • HIV/AIDS - the basics
  • Introduction to interpersonal communication
  • Process of behaviour change
  • Principles and practice of counselling
  • Microskills of communication in counselling I & II
  • Types of HIV/AIDS counselling
  • Special counselling situations

Training outcomes
After completing the training programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain and discuss HIV/AIDS facts and figures
  • Identify behaviours that may create a risk of HIV transmission
  • Explain the rights and responsibilities of employees in the workplace with regard to HIV/AIDS
  • Identify and apply relevant policies and procedures for dealing with HIV/AIDS in the workplace
  • Explain and discuss various approaches to counselling
  • Counsel workgroup members in respect of HIV/AIDS
  • Refer workgroup members seeking further counselling to appropriate qualified staff
  • Reflect on counselling experiences and approaches taken
Unit standard alignment
The programme is aligned to the following unit standards:

  • Understand and deal with HIV/AIDS (USID: 12463) (NQF Level: 2) (Credits: 3)
  • Counsel workgroup members in respect of HIV/AIDS (USID: 13203) (NQF Level: 5) (Credits: 3)

Duration of training
Four days: three day contact session + one day portfolio workshop
